I was actually wondering who wrote it and was just heading "out to the web" to confirm my thoughts that Johnny wrote it - didn't that album (I assume that is off that last album he did right b4 dyeing?) win something?

The single won Country Music Award for Single of the Year and the video won a Grammy for best short film. Rick Rubin produced the album which had Cash covering such songs as "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode and "Desperado" by The Eagles. Trent Reznor who wrote the song said the following after hearing Cash's cover and seeing the video:

I pop the video in, and wow… Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow. I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore. … It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning—different, but every bit as pure.

Different in how the song is being approached. Reznor wrote it out of the depression caused by love coming to an end, while Cash approached it more as a testament to a life coming to an end. Same destination, two different roads.
